6-Year-Old Wakes From Coma with Different Personality [Video]

Zoe Rain Bernstein sustained head trauma from a car crash in March that left her in a coma for a month.

Kelsie Bernstein said the doctors told her they didn't know if her daughter, Zoe Bernstein, would make a full recovery after being in a car crash March 25 near La Costa, CA.

Zoe was coming back from her dad’s house for the weekend when he lost control of his truck and crashed into a light pole, said Kelsie. Zoe, who was in a booster seat at the time of the crash, spent a month in the ICU at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego.

"She had to relearn how to eat, use the bathroom, brush her teeth, put on her shoes, everything. When she woke up out of the coma she couldn’t talk. It was completely starting from scratch," remembered Kelsie, who stayed at the hospital with her daughter for nearly a month.

Due to Zoe’s brain injuries, she developed attention deficit disorder (ADD) and behavior issues.

"Her personality is completely different," explained Kelsie.

Since the accident Kelsie moved herself and her two daughters into her mother’s home in San Marcos to help cover medical costs. She also bartends twice a week at The Kraken in Cardiff.

With the help of an aide, Zoe will return to Mission Estancia Elementary in Carlsbad in the fall, where she will start first grade.
