Hidden in a Business Park, Campus Cafe Is Not to Be Overlooked

A lunch guarantee for all who order the chicken curry and hot club sandwich with the works.

Car parked and forks ready, Deanne and I set foot for Campus Cafe from the back parking lot at 5966 La Place Court in Carlsbad. Hidden deep within construction and unfinished landscaping, this family-owned and run business is not exactly the easiest spot to find. The buildings surrounding the little cafe seemed new and not yet up to capacity. But a friendly attitude and helpful manner awaits those who come for breakfast or lunch.

Both Deanne and I went straight to the specials menu. When I saw the curry chicken rice, I knew that would be a good challenge for a review. As it turns out, it was no challenge at all. A personal guarantee from Yunie the owner that I would like the curry put my fork at ease. The spices were equally laid among the other flavors of chicken, potato, peas and carrots. I like a strong curry, but if eaten for lunch before returning to work, you'll need a curiously strong breath mint. I think a single Tic Tac would have sufficed in this case. Depending on the day, the special might be Japanese noodle soup udon, spicy pork and rice, teriyaki combo or beef rib eye.

Deanne couldn't wait to dig into her sandwich; in fact, she munched on fresh fruit waiting for it to arrive. "The fresh fruit was a great appetizer, all in season and yummy," she said. Once her sandwich arrived, she dug right in. "First off, I was exceptionally hungry for it being 11:30 a.m. This hit the spot. It had turkey, artichoke spread, bacon, avocado, cheese and some other ingredients warmed up on a fresh roll. For a place so hidden, the food is amazing. I also thought the owner Yunie made us feel right at home," Deanne said.
