Meet the First Person in Line for the iPad 2 in Carlsbad
First customers line up at the Carlsbad Apple Store a day before Friday's 5 p.m. launch of the iPad 2.
What does it take to be the first person in line at the Carlsbad Apple Store for Friday’s 5 p.m. launch of the iPad 2? For Paul Yorke, of Escondido, it meant staking a claim at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday – more than 24 hours before the launch of the new Apple tablet computer.
“It’s going to be a long wait, but I’m first in line,” exclaimed Yorke as he gave two thumbs up. Throughout Thursday night and Friday, Yorke’s coworkers are planning to help support him by bringing him food and holding his place in line for those times when nature calls.
Yorke, who considers himself an Apple convert, was first exposed to Apple in 2007. Initially, he was skeptical about Apple until a friend convinced him to get the first generation iPhone. He explains, “Once I got involved with Apple I fell in love with the operating system, with their way of doing business, with their machines and everything about it.”

Yorke and his wife own just about all of Apple’s current products. Yorke said that he loves the way Apple’s products all come together and “just work”. While Yorke’s wife isn’t as technically savvy as he is, Yorke said, “She can use it all.”
About three hours after Yorke got in line, a second customer queued up. Apparently, though, his wife wasn't as understanding as Yorke’s. “One guy was here but his wife came and made him leave,” said Yorke. If only we could have heard that couple’s conversation on their ride home.
