Video: The Wellness Hour (As Seen on TV!)
The No.1 producer of medical and dental documentaries is right here in Carlsbad.
The Wellness Hour is filmed in a 6000-square-foot studio right in the heart of Carlsbad Village. Randy Alvarez is CEO, founder and host of the Wellness Hour. He explains to Patch: "It's a real show. By definition, it's an infomercial but it's real interviews, real answers."
Every week doctors fly in from all over the county and out of the country to be on the show. "About three a week will come here and we do medical documentaries. We're the No. 1 producer of medical and dental documentaries in the world," says Alvarez.
Alvarez brought the Wellness Hour studio to Carlsbad three years ago. He hired Oceanside-based Broadcast Design International to build the set—the same company that built Katie Couric's CBS set.
"I interview doctors at that news desk about their truth as they see it and then we're able to air that in the local market that they are from." Alvarez says this provides people access to the doctors they see on TV.
When it comes to content Alvarez says his show stays away from "gimmicky stuff or multilevel marketing, or juices and supplements. But, of course, I can't be a watchdog either, so I'm sure there are a few quacks that sneak on the show. But we try to attract the mainstream doctors."
Alvarez buys about a half million dollars of airtime a month. In San Diego, you might see his show on Channel 4 or you can watch it online. "We have about 750 30-minute interviews on wellnesshour.com. Also I give marketing advice on randyalvarez.tv which is a video blog where I just go on there and riff and talk," he adds.
Alvarez has thousands of online followers and he hasn't had the need to do much marketing in Carlsbad. In fact, the building at 300 Carlsbad Village Drive is barely marked.
