Tsunami Advisory Brings Waves of Spectators

From 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Friday, hundreds lined the coast in Carlsbad to watch for signs of tsunami waves.

Many curious people had the same idea Friday morning, to head to the Carlsbad beaches and watch for after a tsunami advisory was issued for the area around 8:41 a.m.

The advisory came after an  hit Japan at 9:46 p.m. PST Thursday.

With about a two-foot surge expected, spectators say lifeguards told surfers to exit the water. The surfers obeyed until the lifeguards left, then promptly re-entered the ocean. By 10 a.m., children were playing on the beach and everything seemed back to normal. However, federal and county emergency management warn the tsunami threat has a 10- to 12-hour window on the West Coast.
