Valentine's Day Can Be Both Sweet and Sour

Carlsbad therapist says it's not all roses on Feb. 14.

The same scene is played out in countless offices all over the country.  Mary gets two dozen red roses delivered to work from her “amazing” boyfriend, while co-worker Sarah stares at her empty desk all day.  Depending on whom you ask, Valentine’s Day can be one of the most magical days of the year, or one of the worst.

“A lot of people end up feeling left out,” said marriage and family therapist Trish Vernazza.  “Even if you don’t have a significant other, you still have a deep desire for someone to acknowledge you.”

Vernazza, who works at the Carlsbad Relationship Counseling Center,  says it’s important to communicate with family and friends and let them know you need something to fill the void on V-day.

“Gifts and cards don’t have to just come from partners,” said Vernazza.  “If Valentine’s Day is a tough time for a loved one, make sure you have something planned to lift their spirits.”

February 14 has become an expensive holiday with the average person expected to spend $116.21 this year, according to the National Retail Federation.

“It’s a day filled with expectations,” said Vernazza.  “Remember the value of simple gifts that have big meaning.  So many people secretly wish for expensive jewelry and pricey flower arrangements.  But the best presents are the ones that tell us WE are valuable.”

Vernazza suggests thinking outside the box (in this case, chocolate box).

“Write your partner a love note or a poem.  Consider giving them a book you know they’ll enjoy.  Get creative and give a gift that says ‘you’re on my mind’.”
