Iconic designer Coco Chanel once said, "Fashion is made to become unfashionable." It's inevitable that all trends will go out of style, but as we know, history repeats itself, and so does fashion.
This year's fall styles are no different. If someone who went to high school in the 70's or 80's were to stop by Carlsbad High School today, they might see some familiar fashion trends among the students (and realize that the old denim jacket they've had in the back of their closet from 30 years ago is suddenly the hottest item to hit the stores).
A few of the most 70's-inspired trends that have returned to the halls of high school include flowy pants, maxi-skirts, rock concert tees, fringe, and denim. The bohemian look is back, and becoming increasingly popular. The boho vibe goes perfectly with Carlsbad kids' laid-back beach days. To pull off the look, girls pair a skirt that flows from waist to toe with a crop top, completing the outfit with a denim vest.
Speaking of denim, it's popping up everywhere-- denim vests, jackets, dresses, and overalls are all in style, and it's personally my favorite trend. Denim is the most versatile of all fabrics, and throwing on a denim vest with any outift--whether with leggings, a dress or a skirt-- is the best way to update the look. I'm glad this one is back!
The 70's decade crosses over into the 80's with leather, studs, and sequins, entering the glam rock era of fashion. Teens make this look work without rocking out too hard by pairing a tougher piece with something sweet, like a motorcycle jacket with a dress. Better yet, girls often take on a DIY (do-it-yourself) project and glue studs onto that old denim jacket to give it a new (and affordable!) look. High-waisted shorts, whether denim, striped or sequined, are another 80's style coming back to teenage closets.
Teens also turn toward the retro trend when accessorizing. Fringed purses, tops, vests, and shoes make great 70's-inspired accessories, as well as statement necklaces and bohemian bags. To find the 80's influence in footwear, look for studded ballet flats and combat boots.
Don't be afraid to mix and match--it's easy to combine these trends with modern styles. The crop top (a shirt or tank top that ends at the midriff) is a new trend; to stay classy and cover up, wear a high-waisted skirt or shorts with it. Floral prints are a fall staple, and make an excellent complement to both denim and leather. Lace, definitely a huge trend this season, isn't just for the girly-girls out there-- edgier girls can toughen it up with glam-rock pieces (combat boots, studded jackets).
