Registration Now Open; Proceeds Enable CEF to Fund District-Wide Music, Hands-On Science & Educational Innovation

, a non-profit organization devoted to developing and launching educational and enrichment programs for nearly 11,000 Carlsbad students, announces the full slate of classes available this summer for its annual CEF Summer Academy and Summer Enrichment programs.

Together these two innovative programs offer area students entering grades K-through-12 a robust curriculum of educational and enrichment opportunities at a time when state budget cuts have eliminated many programs. Funds received from participation in these summertime offerings go toward supporting CEF’s school-year, grant-funded initiatives, including district-wide music, hands-on science and educational innovation.

Summer Academy: Giving HS Students a Jump on the School Year

In its second year, the CEF 2012 Summer Academy provides a variety of courses for academic advancement and credit as well as personal development. These classes, which were designed by CEF for students going into grades 9-through-12, are structured to help students earn credits now to gain greater scheduling flexibility during the school year.

Classes include Digital Photography, English 4, Geometry, Physics, Spanish 3, U.S. History, World History and Chinese 1.

These full-year (10 credits) courses are taught in a six-week period starting Tuesday, June 19 through Friday, July 27. Additionally, semester-long courses (five credits) in Economics, Government, PE I and PE II are available in three-week sessions during this time. Also offered are non-credit SAT Test Prep and High School Guide to College courses as well as a weeklong Sports Clinic for male and female athletes.

All credit classes will be held at , with the exception of Chinese, which is being offered as an online course. The deadline for Summer Academy registration is June 1.

Tuition for 10-credit courses is $495 each; tuition for the online Chinese course is $598. All five-credit courses are $249. All credit courses meet the graduation requirements at Carlsbad HS. Non- (CUSD) students are invited to attend but should check with their current school’s policies regarding applying Summer Academy credits before enrolling. Limited scholarship funds are available through CEF for income-eligible families.

Summer Enrichment for Grades K-9 Grows in Size & Scope

Registration is now open for the fourth annual Summer Enrichment program, with the largest and most exciting roster of courses yet. Designed for grades K-through-9, more than 45 sessions include popular returning classes, such as Carlsbad Idol, Video Game Design, Jr. Authors & Illustrators, Digital Photography and Lego Robotics, as well as new entries such as Mandarin Chinese, Kid vs. Wild, Summer Band Camp and iPad Apps. Summer Enrichment classes are offered in five, weeklong sessions, starting Monday, June 25 through Friday, July 27. The half-day courses range in fees from $120 to $175 per week. Registration is offered on a first-come, first-served basis with discounts for multiple children or classes. Students must register based on the grade they will be entering in the fall. Popular Kids’ Care Program Helps Busy Parents this Summer

In addition to Summer Enrichment at Magnolia Elementary, CEF is offering a summertime extension of its popular Kids’ Care program. Children can be enrolled in Kids’ Care alone or before or after Summer Enrichment classes, with care provided from 7:00 a.m. to 6:25 p.m. each weekday. Combining these two programs represents a great opportunity for working parents to let their kids enjoy a full-day program of fun and enrichment.
