Carlsbad High School Women's Choir Wins 1st Place at Their 1st Competition of the Season

Encore, Carlsbad High School’s women’s intermediate choir, won first place in their division at Saturday’s “For Ladies Only” competition hosted by Bonita Vista High School. This sold-out event featured performances by Bonita Vista, Brea Olinda, Diamond Bar, Eastlake, Esperanza, Glendora, and Walnut High Schools. Under the leadership of Carlsbad High School’s new choral director, Mr. Jessie Bullock, the Encore ladies kept the energy level high and the audience entertained throughout their performance. The judges scored each group on musicianship (vocal tone, intonation, diction, interpretation, dynamics) and showmanship (creativity, execution, difficulty, precision, visual effect). Encore’s set, choreographed by Damon Brown, Carrie Smith and John Marlow, is a 17-minute musical based on the film “Mean Girls.” However, the Carlsbad girls are anything but mean during the competition as they gave standing ovations and heartfelt support to every show choir that performed. With this win under their belts, the ladies of Encore are already working on ways to improve and polish their set for the other competitions ahead of them.

This win was especially meaningful for Carlsbad High School’s new choral director, Jessie Bullock. “Mr. B” brings a wealth of experience, energy and enthusiasm to the CHS choral family. His background includes two years at Burbank High School – a well-known show choir school that inspired the TV series “ Glee,” and three years implementing a brand new program from the ground up at Ontario High School. Mr. Bullock directs all four choirs at Carlsbad High School: Sound Express (advanced mixed show choir), Encore (intermediate women’s show choir), Chamber Singers (advanced mixed choir), and Lancer Choir (beginning mixed choir). Carlsbad High School’s choral program is one of the few remaining programs in all of San Diego County and strives to promote awareness, appreciation, and expression of the arts in the community. Anyone interested in seeing all of the choirs perform at one time should attend the performance “Night with the Stars” at 7pm this Thursday and Friday, February 27 and 28 at the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center. Tickets are $10 and go on sale one hour before each performance.
