Expansion at GlenBrook Health Center to Provide Rehabilitation Services for More North County Residents

New foundations will soon be poured at GlenBrook Health Center in Carlsbad as part of a major expansion of the health center’s rehabilitation services. Open to the general public, GlenBrook Health Center is located at 1950 Calle Barcelona just west of El Camino Real.

The expansion will add 24 skilled nursing beds to accommodate patients primarily in need of short-term rehabilitation following hip, knee, shoulder and other surgeries. GlenBrook currently has 70 skilled nursing beds with professional staffing 24 hours a day.

GlenBrook offers comprehensive physical rehabilitation and skilled nursing services for people recovering from orthopedic and cardiac surgery, stroke or other debilitating illness. The health center’s professional team of registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses and physical, occupational and speech therapists provides a continuum of care from hospital to home designed to meet the needs of each patient.

GlenBrook also features 70 assisted living apartments for seniors who need assistance with such daily routines as bathing, dressing and medication reminders.

“As North County continues to grow, we have experienced increased demand from the general public for post-hospitalization services on a short-term basis,” said Rob Zitsman, administrator for GlenBrook. “In our experience, patients recovering from hip, knee or other surgery can dramatically speed up their recovery time with proper post-op care. GlenBrook offers professional rehabilitation instruction and guidance in a highly controlled environment, which is generally more conducive to the healing process than a home setting where patients are less likely to participate as fully.”

R.D. Olson Construction of Irvine is the general contractor for the project. According to Zitsman, construction of the expanded health center will be completed this fall, with occupancy of the newly expanded area expected before the end of the year. GlenBrook will remain open to serve patients’ needs throughout the expansion process.

In addition to patients from the surrounding community, GlenBrook provides services to residents of La Costa Glen, the continuing care retirement community located adjacent to GlenBrook. The Medicare-certified health center has been serving both La Costa Glen residents and members of the general public since opening in 2004.
