The Carlsbad Charitable Foundation Grants $97,787 at Annual Celebration

The Carlsbad Charitable Foundation (CCF), an affiliate of The San Diego Foundation (www.sdfoundation.org) awarded a total of $97,787 to seven outstanding programs dedicated to enhancing the Carlsbad community. The programs – Caring for our Homebound Seniors, An Impact Imperative ($8,000); Environment Stewardship Academy ($10,000); Homelessness Prevention and Intervention Services ($25,00); Kindness Matters in Carlsbad ($14,000); Preserving Carlsbad’s Wildlife through Volunteerism ($8,087); Schoolhouse Community Garden ($16,000) and Village Music Walk Expansion ($16,700) -- were presented grant checks at the foundation’s 6th Annual Grants Award Ceremony at the Carlsbad Senior Center on June 10, 2013.

George Wooldridge, CCF Grants Committee Chair, stated, "We're extremely honored to support a diverse array of projects enhancing our community. This year, we expanded our focus and sought programs that would have the biggest impact on Carlsbad residents and we accepted proposals in arts and culture, the environment, health and human services, and education. We’re proud that the foundation will be able to have such a wide impact on our community with this year’s grants."

Now in its sixth year of grantmaking, the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation has attracted more than 160 members, granted more than $420,000 to Carlsbad nonprofits, and raised more than $450,000 for a permanent endowment that will support Carlsbad causes into the future.

The grants celebration also marked the second distribution of grants in Carlsbad from the Matt McLaughlin Live Here, Give Here Matching Program. The late Matt McLaughlin of Rancho Bernardo left a generous legacy gift to The San Diego Foundation for use by the Affiliate Foundations in North County. Thanks to the creation of the matching program, all CCF membership generated grantmaking funds (half of each yearly donation) will be matched, dollar for dollar, for at least three years. The Live Here, Give Here match doubled this year’s grants, from $48,893 to $97,787.

“We’re deeply honored to recognize these seven outstanding contributors to our community,” said Tom Applegate, CCF Board Chair, “And, thanks to the Matt McLaughlin Live Here, Give Here program, we were able to double our grantmaking this year.”

About the Grantees

Caring for our Homebound Seniors, An Impact Imperative

Meals-on-Wheels

The CCF grant will help offset the direct cost of delivering healthy meals to homebound Carlsbad seniors, age 60 and over, who are unable to meet their daily nutritional needs. The primary goal is to support the independence and well-being of its clients. The grant will allow an estimated 7,920 meals to be delivered and each senior will receive a caring contact and a wellness check at the time of delivery. Additionally, Meals-on-Wheels will make referrals for additional services as needed. These meals will help Carlsbad seniors to age in place with dignity.

Environmental Stewardship Academy

Aqua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation

The CCF grant will expand the Environmental Stewardship Academy to all Carlsbad third grade students, expanding to include those Carlsbad students who are enrolled in Encinitas Unified School District (EUSD) and San Marcos Unified School District (SMUSD) schools. The Academy delivers an in-depth, participatory curriculum through a series of three annual onsite visits to Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation’s Discovery Center on the southern shore of the lagoon. The curriculum is aligned with specific California State Academic Standards for Social and Life Sciences and the program topics include lagoon history, native plants, Luiseno culture, and bird migration.

Homelessness Prevention and Intervention Services

Community Resource Center

The CCF grant will increase the reach of the Homelessness Prevention and Intervention Program from 225 to 275 Carlsbad households. The program provides low income and episodically homeless Carlsbad households with wrap-around services to achieve a path to self-sufficiency. Community Resource Center will provide the Carlsbad residents with access to Homelessness Prevention and Intervention services, including six months of case management, financial literacy and nutrition education and free nutritious food on a weekly basis in addition to rental assistance on an as needed basis.

Kindness Matters in Carlsbad

Kids for Peace

The CCF grant will enable Kids for Peace to engage all 42 Carlsbad public and private schools in the Kindness Matters in Carlsbad project in an effort to reduce bullying and increase kindness. Each school, from pre-schools through high schools, will create a kindness-themed art banner to be displayed publically. The publically-displayed banners will generate goodwill and joy for Carlsbad citizens and create a culture of kindness in Carlsbad schools and beyond.

Preserving Carlsbad’s Wildlife through Volunteerism

Project Wildlife

The CCF grant will enable Project Wildlife to deepen its partnership with Carlsbad and to enhance conservation efforts in this special region of the county. The program has two primary goals: the first is to increase the number of wildlife rescued in and released back to Carlsbad by better publicizing Project Wildlife’s services, making it easier to rescue wildlife by sending transport volunteers to homes and businesses, and educating the community about conservation and wildlife rescue. The second goal is to raise awareness about, and interest in, Carlsbad’s natural environment by enhancing connections to wildlife. The number of wildlife rescued will increase by at least 10% and Project Wildlife will offer personalized education at the rescue sites to at least 150 individuals.

Schoolhouse Community Garden

Carlsbad Community Gardens Collaborative

The CCF grant will enable the sustainable development of the Schoolhouse Community Garden at Calavera Hills Community Park. The grant will support both the physical development of the garden and the programmatic development of garden engagement activities. The funding will provide for the purchase of communal garden equipment, planting materials, interpretative displays and signage. The programming will include group planting events, garden tours for children and community groups, and hands-on gardening classes for all ages, providing healthy, intergenerational, and culturally enriching experiences for Carlsbad residents.

Village Music Walk Expansion

Carlsbad Music Festival

The CCF grant will allow the Carlsbad Music Festival (CMF) to expand the Village Music Walk, a free community event in downtown Carlsbad, featuring short concerts by Festival and local musicians in intimate venues throughout the Village. The mission of the Carlsbad Music Festival Music Walk Expansion project is to change the way people view both adventurous music and the Village of Carlsbad through presenting free, high quality music in unusual venues around the Village. The CMF will partner with local arts organizations and schools to identify talented, local and nationally recognized musicians to perform short concerts on two Village Music Walk nights (September 20, 2013 and June 21, 2014), enabling Carlsbad residents and visitors to explore new venues in Carlsbad, while enjoying short, curated concerts performed by talented musicians.
