All Aboard: Amtrak to Add Stops in Carlsbad

Carlsbad residents will no longer have to travel to Oceanside to board the Pacific Surfliner.

Amtrak officials are putting the finishing touches on plans to add stops in Carlsbad on the Pacific Surfliner’s schedule, according to an Amtrak spokeswoman.

Currently the train travels across Carlsbad, bypassing the stations in Carlsbad Village and Poinsettia that are serviced by the Coaster commuter train.

Details on when Carlsbad Amtrak service will begin and which trains will stop here have not been finalized, said Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham, but negotiations are under way.

“It will be coming soon,” Graham said.

The Surfliner will also add stops in Encinitas and Sorrento Valley.

A timetable that went into affect on April 1 includes trains that have scheduled stops listed in Carlsbad Village and Poinsettia, but Graham said those are placeholders in anticipation of the new service. That schedule is attached to this article in the PDF section.

The placeholders list three daily stops at the two Carlsbad stations for both northbound and southbound trains, but Graham said those are subject to change.
