Avoiding Rattlesnakes and Insects on Carlsbad Trails

Summer is a great time to enjoy Carlsbad trails. Use these tips to stay safe during these hot months:

- Rattlesnakes are more likely seen in warmer temperatures, but when it gets too hot, snakes retreat into cool spots.  Don't reach into shaded crevices or step in between rocks.

- Walk in the center of the trail if there is shrub or grasses hanging over the side of the trail.

- Dress in light colored clothes to discourage mosquitoes and help spot ticks more easily.

- If bitten by any insect or tick, treat with a topical antibiotic.  If rashes or flu-like symptoms occur, seek medical attention immediately.

- Hike on trails only during daylight hours from sunrise to sunset.  Mosquitoes are most active at dawn and the first two hours after sunset.

- Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.  Don't forget to bring water for your pets!

- Wear sunscreen, a long sleeved loose shirt and long pants to protect exposed areas of skin from sunburn.
