Carlsbad Hi-Noon Rotary Hosts Holiday Party for Local Children

The party is an annual event that has been held for almost 20 years for a group of students who might otherwise have a very limited Christmas.

A Christmas party with a couple of special guests—one expected, the other a surprise—was held Dec. 8 at Jefferson Elementary School in Carlsbad. The Carlsbad Hi-Noon Rotary Club hosted the party that was attended by Santa Claus and included entertainment featuring a surprise guest: a fully costumed Captain Jack Sparrow.

The evening event also included games, crafts, holiday songs, family photos, antique fire engine rides, Beanie Babies, and a full dinner for the children and their parents in a festive setting in the school’s auditorium. The Rotary club also provides gifts for the children and grocery gift cards for the parents.

This year, Tip Top Meats in Carlsbad donated $1,800 in food for the children’s party, and Kohls provided a discount for the gifts Rotarians bought for the youngsters.

Rotarian Dawn Van Siclen coordinated the party, as well as shopping for, wrapping and distributing the gifts, assisted by fellow Rotarians Robyn Hill and Wendy Wiegand. Members of the Carlsbad High School Interact Club also assisted, and also sang carols at the party.

Rotarian Bob Fenner was Santa, and fellow Rotarian Faye Bell was Santa's helper. Many other members of the Carlsbad Hi-Noon Rotary Club participated in a variety of ways.
