Carlsbad Woman, 68, is Google Glass Guinea Pig

Suzanne Carneiro is one of 8,000 people chosen to test the high-tech glasses.

Pitching herself as a senior-citizen test subject, Suzanne Carneiro of Carlsbad recently won a rare chance to try out Google Glass, the company's experimental high-tech specs.

The 68-year-old said she "wanted to represent women over 60, to show life isn’t over when you get old and that you can live a full life and be interested in technology."

Google Glass can snap photos, shoot video, relay text messages, make phone calls, guide you with GPS, and basically do everything a smartphone does but through a small cube of glass in the corner of eyewear.

Carneiro was one of 8,000 contest winners. She picked up the computerized spectacles (which actually have no lenses) at Google's office in Venice at the end of June, paying $1,500 plus tax.

Carneiro has been wearing them ever since, although not every day.

"I’m a tester, so I feel an obligation to test them. My favorite place to use them is the San Diego Botanic gardens in Encinitas, where I volunteer each week. I don’t need to take off my gloves and get my cell phone to take a picture. It’s so fast and the camera is quite good," said Carneiro.

Carneiro said she hasn't gotten any strange looks when she wears the lens-free gadget.

"Most people don’t notice because I bought Glass in the shale color to blend into my hair. The other colors are tangerine and sky. I also wear a hat a lot. I’ve been to Trader Joe’s and Costco and not one person has even noticed," she said.

The computerized eyewear also transforms into sunglasses with special polarized lenses that come in a protective bag.

Carneiro explains more about her experiences with Google Glass in the video above.
