Carlsbad City Library is winding down its community reading program, Carlsbad Reads Together, featuring Shanghai Girls by New York Times bestselling author Lisa See. Our librarians have recommended books with similar themes to Shanghai Girls, including the bond between mothers and daughters and sisters.

A couple of the selections from the list:

Paula by Isabelle Allende
When Isabel Allende's daughter, Paula, became gravely ill and fell into a coma, the author began to write the story of her family for her unconscious child. As she writes,  bizarre ancestors appear before our eyes. Allende shares both delightful and bitter childhood memories, anecdotes of youthful years and the most intimate secrets passed along in whispers.
