The 33nd annual Carlsbad Triathlon, one of the longest running triathlons in the world, will take place on Sunday, July 13, along the scenic Carlsbad coastline.

Carlsbad Boulevard from Pine Avenue to La Costa Avenue will be closed from 6 a.m. until 2 p.m. on race day.

Other road closures during this time include:
  • Tamarack Ave. between Carlsbad Blvd. and Garfield St.
  • Palomar Airport Rd. between Carlsbad Blvd. and Avenida Encinas
  • Poinsettia Ln. between Carlsbad Blvd. and Avenida Encinas
  • Avenida Encinas between Carlsbad Blvd. and Ponto Drive
Presented by the City of Carlsbad Parks & Recreation Department, the Carlsbad Triathlon begins at 8 a.m. at Tamarack Surf Beach, and includes a 1K open-water swim, followed by a 25K bike course, and a 5K run, which follows the coastline of Carlsbad, past scenic beaches, lagoons and a wildlife preserve.

In addition, for the open water swim, lifeguards will be on hand and "swimming buddies" from the TriClub of San Diego are available to encourage racers as they compete.

Rachael Shay, special events supervisor, said the Carlsbad Triathlon is a fitting experience to have in the City of Carlsbad.

"When you think of Carlsbad, you think of health and fitness, and this event represents those ideals," Shay said. Shay said the Carlsbad

Triathlon attracts a variety of athletes, from beginners to seasoned professionals.

I like that we have this event, as I especially hope all of the merchants, restaurants, etc make a lot of extra money. But alas, Mayor Matt Hall and the Carlsbad City Council have inspired a lot of hatred against owners of Recreational Vehicles; and as this topic deals with "roads", I suspect that at any moment, somebody will use this space to make hateful comments about this group of people (RV-ers) who purchase US-made products. Where are you Barabara Segal?

Wow. I always wondered where all that trash came from. Kinda' makes me feel sorry for all those people who drive to the beach in autos, stick around for a few hours, and then NEVER, of course, leave any trash whatsoever in the sand. (hey Matt Hall, via your anti-RV ordinance, you must be so very proud!)

Hey Carrie S. - you'll be fine as long as the boss doesn't do a "short pants" check?
