Community Gathers to Paddle Board, Fundraise for Vision Center

The family of 19-year-old Hunter "Vegas" Chanove organized the fundraiser to raise awareness and help find a cure for choroidal melanoma research.

Friends, family, and Carlsbad residents participated in a stand up paddle board fundraiser at Agua Hedionda Lagoon on Saturday to support cancer patient Hunter “Vegas” Chanove.

Chanove was diagnosed in October with a rare type of eye cancer called choroidal melanoma. The proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the research team at The Vision Center at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles to help find a cure.

“We started off with a little vision and it flourished into this big event,” Chanove said. “It was my dad’s idea to get this annual fundraiser together.”

Lou Chanove said the turnout was larger than expected and the donations "have been incredible."

There will be two more fundraisers this year, one before summer and one after.
