The Smartest Card in Your Wallet

September is National Library Card Sign-up Month. Kids are invited to get their first library cards or receive a prize for already owning one.

Did you know that a library card is the most important school supply your child can own? A library card provides students the resources they need to compete academically. Through Carlsbad City Library’s free online databases, students have access to high-quality news articles, encyclopedias and test preparation materials that can’t be found through an Internet search.

Homework help is provided through the library's free Homework Zone program and free computer classes are offered for all ages. Public libraries are also a popular spot for free Internet access, an important resource for families without access at home when students need to use the Internet to complete their homework.

During the month of September, kids and teens are invited to show their library card at the Cole Library Children’s Desk and receive a reward. At Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane, kids are invited to a Library Card Sign-up Festival on Sept. 21 from 3-5 p.m. to sign up for their first card. Kids who already have their own card can show it off for a prize.

Anyone with picture identification and proof of address may obtain a library card at no charge. Download an application and return it to the library.

Library Card Sign-up Month is a time when the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country remind the community about the importance of libraries.
