Video: Carlsbad Seniors Get Their Sweat On with Virtual Reality CyberCycles

Carlsbad by the Sea residents are enjoying "exergaming," a new trend in working out that incorporates the mind and body.

It may look like an ordinary exercise bike, but the CyberCycle at Carlsbad By The Sea includes hand steering and a virtual reality game-like screen that challenges the mind and body.

"This is a whole movement called exergaming," explained Davis Park, Director of The Front Porch Center for Technology Innovation and Wellbeing, "the focus is less on the physical and more on the fun."

Residents of the retirement community in Carlsbad had the opportunity to participate in a pilot program using the bike and compete against another retirement community. Carlsbad By the Sea won the challenge. Gary Groot helped lead the way.

"In my age category, I’m the best," laughed 91-year-old Groot.

Front Porch Retirement Communities which runs Carlsbad by the Sea is purchasing CyberCycles for it’s other locations after seeing great success with the pilot program. They found some residents who never exercised in the past, embraced the CyberCycle.
