Bestselling Author Lisa See to Visit Carlsbad City Library April 13

New York Times bestselling author Lisa See's books have been praised as "achingly beautiful" and "stellar."

What happens when Carlsbad reads together? That’s the question posed by Carlsbad City Library when its communitywide reading program kicks off each April. Carlsbad Reads Together is designed to bring community members together and engage them in discussion about the same book at the same time.

The 2013 book selection is the New York Times bestseller Shanghai Girls by Lisa See. The book has been described as a “rollicking read” by Marie Claire and praised for its “stunning emotional depth” by The San Diego Union-Tribune. Shanghai Girls follows the journey of sisters Pearl and May from the Shanghai of the 1930s to Los Angeles’ Chinatown in the mid-20th Century.

See will visit Carlsbad City Library’s Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium to discuss and sign her books on Saturday, April 13 at 2 p.m. Seating is limited and tickets are required. Free tickets will be given out at Schulman Auditorium beginning at 12 p.m. the day of the talk. Books will be available for purchase at the library from The Grove at Juniper bookstore.

See is also the author of the beloved books Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Peony in Love and Dreams of Joy. Her first book, On Gold Mountain: The One Hundred Year Odyssey of My Chinese-American Family was a national bestseller and a New York Times Notable Book. She has been honored as National Woman of the Year by the Organization of Chinese American Women.

Setting the stage for See’s talk will be a Chinese tea ceremony on April 13 at 1 p.m. Award winning author, China scholar and health educator Ken Cohen will discuss the legends of Chinese tea, demonstrate the Chinese tea ceremony and provide guests with Chinese teas to enjoy.

Additional Carlsbad Reads Together events include Shanghai Girls book discussions, events for children featuring stories and crafts, a film series, and a performance by internationally-acclaimed musician (and Carlsbad resident!) Wu Man on April 21. Enriching the experience will be the library’s Cannon Art Gallery exhibition Vanishing Traditions: Textiles and Treasures from Southwest China, which runs until June 2 and showcases stunning Chinese textiles, clothing and crafts.
