American dramatist Arthur Miller’s writing has earned him the Pulitzer Prize, seven Tony Awards, two Drama Critics Circle Awards and an array of accolades for his plays including All My Sons, Death of a Salesman, The Crucible and A View from the Bridge. Carlsbad Playreaders pays homage to the famed playwright with a reading of A View from the Bridge, directed by Kristen Fogle, on Monday, Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m.
A View from the Bridge tells the tragic story of Italian American longshoreman, Eddie Carbone. Set in 1950s Brooklyn, Eddie, his wife Beatrice, and her orphaned niece Catherine live in a small ground floor apartment. When Beatrice’s Italian cousins arrive to stay, hoping for a better life in America, the Carbone’s lives change forever. As Catherine falls in love with one of the newly arrived immigrants, Eddie's jealousy erupts in a rage that consumes him, his family and his world.
"Though I have a strong theater background, it’s having studied Rhetoric that serves me best with readings,” says Fogel. “Popular plays tend to get into a rhythm, a repetition to the way they are presented and performed, but hopefully with the thought and attention paid to the script by myself and the actors, you will hear lines delivered a bit differently, actors bringing fresh intention to their roles, and discover a new side to these classic characters."
Though the play debuted in 1955, its appeal is evident from the numerous productions mounted across the country. A recent star-studded revival of A View from the Bridge on Broadway prompted The New York Times to note, “...this latest incarnation makes the case that certain plays, like certain operas, are rich enough to be revisited as often and as long as there are performers with strong, original voices and fresh insights.”
The Carlsbad Playreaders cast includes Jim Clevenger (Ensemble), Kent Gándola (Ensemble), Bernard X. Kopsho (Eddie Carbone), Eric Poppick (Alfieri), Sassan Saffari (Rodolfo), Kayla Schafforth (Catherine), Daisy Talley (Beatrice) and Greg Wittman (Marco).
The play reading will take place at Carlsbad City Library’s Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium, located at 1775 Dove Lane. Donations are taken at the door; there are no advance reservations. Suggested donations are $5 for adults and $1 for students. For more information, visit carlsbadplayreaders.org or call 760-602-2012.
