Radio Golf by August Wilson Kicks Off Carlsbad Playreaders’ 2012 Season

Feb. 13 play reading is in honor of Black History Month and celebrates one of America's most prolific playwrights.

Carlsbad Playreaders presents August Wilson’s Radio Golf on Monday, Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m. This fast-paced and wonderfully funny play focuses on African-American life in the 20th century.

The play reading will take place at Carlsbad City Library’s Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium, located at 1775 Dove Lane. Suggested donations of $5 for adults and $1 for students are taken at the door.

In Radio Golf, a successful entrepreneur aspires to become Pittsburgh's first black mayor. But when the past begins to catch up with him, secrets get revealed that could be his undoing.

Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning playwright August Wilson “chronicled the African-American experience in the 20th century in a series of plays that will stand as a landmark in the history of black culture, of American literature and of Broadway theater” according to The New York Times.

Radio Golf, directed by Antonio “T.J” Johnson, features top San Diego actors Monique Gaffney, Abner Genece, Rhys Green, Walter Murray, Joe Powers and Willie Williams.

The Carlsbad Playreaders’ 2012 season marks the first for new Artistic Director Maelyn Gándola. Her previous directorial credits include Marianne McDonald’s translation of Oedipus Tyrannus, Proof, Stuck on the Edge, Metamorphoses, Lost and Found and Someone Might See.

For Carlsbad Playreaders, Gándola directed Almost, Maine and performed in The Children’s Hour, Claudia Meets Fulano Colorado and The Clean House. She received her BA in Theatre Arts – Directing and Communications from Brigham Young University and is also a playwright.
