Supporting Carlsbad High School Choral Has Never Been So Entertaining!

The 2014 CHS POPS Concert featuring four award-winning choirs.

The 2014 CHS POPS concert will be held on May 29 – 31 at 7 p.m. at the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center. This is the final choral concert of the year and will feature well-rehearsed selections along with brand new numbers by all four CHS choirs. Sound Express, the advanced mixed show choir and Encore, the intermediate women’s show choir, will perform their competition sets. Chamber Singers, the advanced mixed choir, and Lancer Choir, the beginning mixed choir, will perform their concert selections. In addition to classical repertoires and show choir routines, there will be new surprises this year including themed silent auction items and an al fresco pre-show featuring solo and group acts entertaining audiences outside of the theater prior to the doors opening.

According to choral director, Mr. Bullock, “Our POPS concert is the end of the year concert and it will really showcase all of the choirs here at CHS. I have been working on some numbers for just the men to perform as well as all of the choirs together as one very large group. It's going to be a lot of fun and hard work!”

POPS also marks the farewell performances for the CHS choral seniors. When these seniors were asked “What’s the most important thing you have learned by being a member of choir?” the responses were heartfelt. Sound Express member and “best performer” winner, Steven Dreifuss, stated, “I’ve learned that you have to be a team and the harder you work the more success you will have. Also the more time you put in the more you are able to surpass whatever goals you have.” Alana Fletcher, Chamber Singer, shares this sentiment saying, “I’ve learned that hard work and dedication truly pays off. I’ve also learned that when a group of people come together amazing things can happen and a family forms.” Alex Cabrera, Chamber & Sound Express member shared, “We are responsible as  a team to make sure we know our difficult vocal parts and how to make our songs interesting with different techniques. We need to work together as a team in order to be the best we possibly can be.”

Mr. Bullock’s goal during his first year as Carlsbad High School’s choral director is to highlight the best in his students and instill the desire to improve with each opportunity. The students have taken this message to heart. Mr. Bullock brings a wealth of experience, energy and enthusiasm to the CHS choral family. His background includes two years at Burbank High School, a well-known show choir school that inspired the TV series “Glee,” and three years implementing a brand new program from the ground up at Ontario High School in Ontario, CA. “Mr. B.” directs all four choirs at Carlsbad High School.

The public is invited to enjoy these talented students and support this award-winning program at POPS. Tickets are $15 and will be available online at itsmyseat.com/CHSPops through May 26th. Tickets will also be available at the box office before each show. This show always sells out.
