Teen and Family Open Studios Offer Hands-on Art Activities

Special event just for teens on April 29 will be presented by the City of Carlsbad's Cultural Arts Office and Carlsbad City Library in partnership with San Diego Museum of Art. Families are invited to join the fun on May 11.

Calling all teen artists! The City of Carlsbad’s Cultural Arts Office and Carlsbad City Library’s Youth Services Division are teaming up with the San Diego Museum of Art for a fun, interactive hands-on art making activity geared towards local teens. Teen Open Studios will be held on Monday, April 29 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Georgina Cole Library, located at 1250 Carlsbad Village Drive.

This free event will feature a brief overview of the current exhibition “Vanishing Traditions: Textiles and Treasures from Southwest China” which is currently on display at the Cannon Art Gallery, located at Carlsbad City Library. The exhibition features an extraordinary showing of hundreds of works of handmade jewelry, headdresses, shoes and clothing.

The hands-on art-making portion of Teen Open Studios will start with Suminagashi, which is using inks floating on water and then laying delicate rice paper over it to colorize and dye it. Then teens will transition to setting up a loom and weaving. Both events complement the gallery exhibit.

“The Cultural Arts Office is excited to offer a tailor-made event designed for teen artists inspired by the textiles and art making techniques from Southwest China,” Community Arts Education Coordinator Tonya Rodzach shared. “The partnership with the San Diego Museum Art’s education department allows the city to continue to provide high-quality arts education experiences to our community. We are thrilled to provide this fun, engaging event for our local teens.”

Families with younger children are invited to attend a Family Open Studios Plus event on Saturday, May 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  This free, hands-on art-making workshop designed for the whole family takes place in Carlsbad City Library’s outdoor courtyard, located at 1775 Dove Lane. Family Open Studios programs relate to the Gallery’s current exhibition and for the May 11 hands-on workshop, the art project will incorporate the mythical dragons, forest animals and intricate designs found decorating the textiles and metal works in the exhibition.

In addition, two free performances complement the themes of the exhibition and expand the day’s activities. The special presentations, which take place at 11:45 a.m. and again at 1:15 p.m., feature traditional Chinese lion dancing by the Southern Sea Lion Dancers, a cultural performance group founded by students at UC San Diego.
