Help Local State Parks Keep Their Education Efforts Healthy for Next Generation

Can your business, foundation or school could start a project to raise more funds for a small Educational Grant for the local state parks?

Do you have a great childhood memory of sitting at one of the local state beaches like San Elijo or South Carlsbad attending one of the park educator's campfire programs? Maybe now you have a successful business or connections to a local non-profit or foundation, and can help preserve and grow those local state parks educational efforts.

I am VP/Founder of the Friends of Cardiff & Carlsbad State Beaches. Our group, the FCCSB, worked hard over the winter to create a $5,000 Educational Grant for the educational division at San Elijo State Beach and South Carlsbad State Beach campgrounds. In the photo here, Robin Greene, superintendent for California State Park's north sector in the San Diego coast district, received the $5,000 FCCSB Educational Grant from Bill Wisener, president of the Friends of Cardiff & Carlsbad State Beaches non-profit association.

The educational efforts at the local, coastal state parks are completely grant funded, meaning no public funds are used. All of the funding has to be raised through grants and donations.

FCCSB's Educational Grant came about after hard-working volunteer camp hosts at the local state beach campgrounds raised the money by selling more than 1,000 bundles of firewood to campers over the winter. The money will go to help fund the parks' educational campfire program series for children and families, and help provide other free educational park events. Maybe your business or school could start a project to raise more funds for a small Educational Grant?

More help is needed to help us fund the park's educational efforts in 2013 and beyond. Companies, non-profits, foundations, businesses or individuals interested in helping the parks' educational unit can call 858-603-2705 or email Bill@FCCSB.org

The parks' campfire talks and other free events with educational components are open to the public as well as registered campers. "The interpretive educational unit is one of the real gems of our local state beaches," said FCCSB President Wisener. "The FCCSB is proud to help ensure park educators can reach as many children as possible to teach them about our valuable natural resources at the beaches."
