10 thoughts on the 4th...

Fireworks make no sense, there is a place in Carlsbad where people drive too fast and stop and listen to the waves folks...

Touching a few bases on the 4th of July...

- If I'm doing the math right, the U.S. of A. is 236 years old today. What was Carlsbad like 236 years ago and what will it be like 236 years from today? Ah, someone in the year 2248 will be saying, "Seems like yesterday we went to LegoLand right over there..."

- What exactly is the fascination with fireworks? I don't get it, never have. For the most part if you've seen one you've seen 'em all. Just about every newspaper in the country today will have some photo display of fireworks in its masthead. Yawn...

- Most hackneyed phrase you will read somewhere today: Red, White & Boom!  Yawn Part II...

- So, I left NorCal and here is what I got: Gave up the Giants for the Padres, the Niners for the Chargers and Stanford and Cal for SDSU and USD.  Hummm???? ...

- Still trying to figure out the speed limit on El Camino Real. Is it really higher than on I5 or does is just seem that way. Folks don't waste time on that stretch of highway...

- I am told there is an "old" Carlsbad and a "new" Carlsbad. If so, where does one end and the other begin and do folks in both extremes get along? I am just off Tamarack so am I "old" or "new" or "somewhere in between"?

- Why do so many people who walk or jog along the beach here wear headphones? I've been known to do the same thing - away from the shore. But honestly, when you have one of if not the best of nature's sounds (waves crashing) easily within earshot then I say take advantage of it cause no Top 20 hit song can top that sound.

- Lived in NorCal - right on a fault line - and felt one quake in 18 years; we had two near here overnight and I've been back 34 days. Is that a good sign or not?

- Have a happy 4th. After I comtemplate why I am now using words like pension, Social Security and Medicare I'll go out and explore the 'hood and count the number of flags waving the marine layer breeze...
