Update: Carlsbad's Injured Pelican Gets Stitches and Hooks Removed at SeaWorld

Pelican found injured in Carlsbad on the mend at Sea World.

No, we haven't forgotten about the injured pelican that was rescued last week as it walked along the sea wall on Carlsbad Blvd.

He/she was taken to Sea World for some rehab and today we received the following email from Terry Kelly, Sea World's public relations director:

"Thanks for your interest in our rescue and rehabilitation program. In the case of the pelicans, we take in pelicans that are brought to us and the one you saw in Carlsbad is among them.

"If they are successfully rehabilitated, we return them to the wild. So far this
year, we have taken in more than 110 pelicans. As for marine mammals, we have
rescued more than 100 this year, mostly seals and sea lions.

I checked and found out that the pelican from Carlsbad came to us on July 18. It came in with a number of injuries, including:

-a tear in its pouch (which we have sewn up)

-entangled in fishing line (we detangled and removed)

-fish hook in stomach (we removed)

-wing injury of some sort, which we are assessing and will treat.

"We have a total of 20 pelicans in hand right now at our Oiled Wildlife Care Center."

We'll keep you updated on his progress and hopefully next week visit the facility and get a first-hand look.

Editor's Note: The Youtube video attached is not of this particular pelican, but showcases SeaWorld's pelican rescue and rehabilitation program.
