The Sound Of Music: Music to my Ears

With actors ready to go, stage lights set and an anxious crowd, The Sound of Music premiered in The Star Theater Aug. 9. Directer Ali Whitman portrayed the popular musical in a fresh new way with an excellent cast to celebrate Carlsbad community Theater's 30 year anniversary.

For those who are unfamiliar with the beloved musical, Maria, a postulant is sent to live with the seven von Trapp children serving as a nanny. Maria's warm spirit and love for singing revives their family spirit after dealing with their mother's death before World War 2. As the plot line continues, chemistry progresses between Maria and Captain von Trapp while he continues date another woman who does not truly love him.

From the start, one aspect that carries the musical is the Orchestra. There are many moments where live music had a stronger impact than any tape could, making each musical number even more enjoyable.

One of the best and most surprising parts about this musical was the casting of Mother Abbess, played by Monique Sanchez. Sanchez's acting made many scenes more believable. Not to mention a beautiful voice that carried few but crucial musical numbers in both acts.

The von Trapp children also brings new life to the production. Actors like Ben Little portraying Kurt, Skye McMillian portraying Liesl, and Lorelei Krone portraying Gretl fully embraced the best qualities in the characters often providing the best laughs and built the best chemistry with Maria. When the children dance with Maria you may find yourself easily smiling ear to ear.

Another great aspect is Whitman's balance between singing and dialogue. Even one who is not a huge fan of musical theater will enjoy the great balance Whitman has created.

With so many strong aspects, The Sound of Music is the perfect end of summer musical to go see with you're friends or children.

This is a beautiful way to celebrate 30 years of Carlsbad theater and a must see production running from Aug. 9 to 18 at The Star Theater.
