Carlsbad's Gemological Institute Brings Some Bling to Lindberg Field

The new airport art display is full of color, as "GIA Celebrates Birthstones"

The Carlsbad-based has been invited to show off some of it's prized gemstones at an unexpcted showplace: The San Diego International Airport.

GIA has opened a new exhibit at the airport called "GIA Celebrates Birthstones."  The exhibit is part of the San Diego International Airport Art Program, which began in 2006, as a way to engage travelers in innovative experiences.

According to Constance Y. White, Art Program Manager at the airport, it will "be a treasure – no pun intended – to have an exhibit of precious gems and semi precious stones to be availble for our traveling public to see."

The airport authority asked GIA to share it's expertise, and gems, with the 40,000 or so passengers who pass through the terminals every day.

The exhibit contains more than 250 objects from around the world, including gemstones, minerals, and jewelry. Some of the birthstones are shown in their natural forms, in the rocks where they were found. The colorful gems will be on display in Terminal 2 West, at the airport until February 20, 2012.

Because of the high value of the gems, the birthstone displays are located behind the security gates. Consequently only ticketed passengers either coming home, or flying out will be able to see the exhibit.
