Do a Good Deed While Scooping Up Discounted Designer Clothes

North County Health Services is raising funds by selling a 3,000-item designer clothing collection for up to 80 percent off the retail price.

A unique boutique has been put together in Carlsbad. Organizers say shopping for discount designer clothing at this warehouse is "shopping with a cause."

In the collection you'll find hundreds of choices of work clothes, lingerie, shoes, evening wear, wedding dresses and children's wear. Buying these clothes will benefit a nonprofit group of health centers, North County Health Services (NCHS), which includes Carlsbad Family Medicine on Madison Street. It's part of a group of 11 clinics that serve the needs of the uninsured and underinsured.

NCHS Fund Development Director Dana Withall says the huge collection of designer clothing was donated by a woman in Lake Tahoe who is downsizing her businesses and chose to give to a nonprofit.

"It's an inventory of high end, beautiful designer clothing—French, Italian, Spanish, a lot of designers that maybe we haven't heard of but the movie stars have heard of. Gorgeous clothing."

And at 75 to 80 percent off retail prices, this event is truly a shopper's delight.

"There is something here for everyone, all sizes of beautiful clothing," said Withall. "You can buy an item here that was priced at $60 for $5. Or we may have items that were $1,800 that are now down to $200."

Volunteers have come together to help out, for the love of fashion and to serve the needs of those who don't have medical insurance. They've spent hours organizing the 3,000 clothing items and marking down price tags.

Nancy Driscoll is a retired registered nurse and is part of the fund development board for NCHS.  "This is fabulous," she said. "It's a wonderful opportunity for the community to get brand-new designer clothing at drastically reduced prices, and it's a fun way for us to raise funds for North County Health Services."

The donor of this clothing wanted the proceeds of this sale to serve women and children. And her generosity will do that—when the shopping begins. In the past two weeks, many have stopped by to preview the merchandise. Some came from the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce. Even a few husbands have stopped by to take a look at some of the clothing and fancy lingerie.

Saturday, Dec. 4 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. is the big sale day open to the public. Or, for $40, you can register to be part of an "invitation only" shopping event the night before. The sale takes place at 5931 Priestly Drive in Carlsbad. For more details or to register, visit NCHS-health.org.
