7. Carlsbad

For job seekers in sunny southern California, look no further than Carlsbad. The city is home to both biotech and leisure companies, such as Life Technologies and Callaway Golf Company. The income-to-expenses ratio is a little pricier than some of our other picks, but its unemployment rate has dropped each year since 2010 (it is currently at 4.9 percent), according to the California Employment Development Department. Plus, the city is close enough to San Diego to commute (approximately 35 miles away from downtown) but far enough away to have its own identity.California State University San Marcos anchors the community, offering leadership training for government and nonprofit professionals in San Diego County. On the weekends, head out to South Carlsbad State Beach to surf, hike or just soak up the sun.
