North County Veterans Center Expands Building Lease [Video Clip]

The Oceanside City Council unanimously voted Wednesday to an additional 3,000 square feet of the Veterans Association of North County Resource Center at at 1617 Mission Ave. in Oceanside.

The Veterans Association of North County has leased additional space with the City of Oceanside for its Veterans Resource Center, which already occupies 10,000 square feet of the former police station at 1617 Mission Ave.

The city had kept the remaining 3.500 square feet of the building for its own use.

Council member and candidate for Mayor Jerry Kern gave the organization a personal check for $1,000 Wednesday on behalf of his wife.

Patch caught up with retired Marine Col. Rocky Chavez Friday to discuss the impact of the lease. Chavez was the undersecretary of Veterans Affairs for the state of California and is a Republican currently running for the 76th State Assembly.

The building isn’t being used for day-to-day operations, however, and VANC is working to raise $1.1 million needed to renovate it.
