Roomful of Teeth, Caroline Shaw, Steven Schick and Claire Chase announced through the Carlsbad Music Festival Kickstarter fundraising campaign.

The Carlsbad Music Festival is announcing its lineup of artists for its 10th Anniversary Festival through its Kickstarter campaign. The artists announced so far are Roomful of Teeth, Caroline Shaw, Steven Schick and Claire Chase, with more artists to be announced throughout the week. The goal of the Kickstarter campaign is to raise $10,000 in 30 days and the campaign will run until the end of the day on Tuesday, July 16th. Additional Festival artists will be announced through updates posted on the Kickstarter page for the duration of the campaign.

This year’s eclectic and adventurous Festival will be held from September 20-22, 2013 in the beautiful seaside Village of Carlsbad, California. The Festival will present the West Coast debut of the New York-based vocal octet, Roomful of Teeth with the 2013 Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and performer Caroline Shaw. The Festival will also feature longtime collaborators and two of the most dynamic and virtuosic performers in contemporary music, percussionist Steven Schick and flutist Claire Chase, performing together as a duo for the first time. The Festival will consist of 50+ performances including a Village Music Walk on Friday, September 20, and concerts in Magee Park and in the Carlsbad Village Theatre on Saturday and Sunday, September 21-22.

Roomful of Teeth is a New York-based vocal octet dedicated to re-imagining singing in the 21st century. Through study with vocal masters from non-classical traditions the world over, Roomful of Teeth continually expands their vocabulary of singing techniques and, through an on-going commissioning project, invites today’s brightest composers to create a repertoire without borders.

One of the pieces commissioned was Partita by Roomful of Teeth member, composer, singer and violinist, Caroline Shaw. This spring, Shaw was awarded the 2013 Pulitzer Prize in Music for Partita which was recorded on Roomful of Teeth's 2012 debut album on New Amsterdam Records. At age 30, Shaw was the youngest Pulitzer Prize winner ever. Her win drew national attention including profiles on NPR's Weekend Edition and in the New York Times.
Flutist Claire Chase is a Leucadia native and winner of a 2012 MacArthur Foundation “Genius Grant.” She is known both for her work as a solo flutist and for being the Founder and Director of the New York and Chicago-based International Contemporary Ensemble. The New York Times has praised her “extravagant technique, broad stylistic range and penetrating musicality” and the Chicago Times has called her “a virtuoso of amazing dexterity and sensitivity.”

Percussionist Steven Schick is internationally known as one of the premier solo percussionists in the world. He is a Distinguished Professor of Music at UCSD, the Director of red fish blue fish, and is the Music Director and Conductor of the La Jolla Symphony. In the past 30 years, he has premiered over 100 works for solo percussion.

The Carlsbad Music Festival Kickstarter campaign will continue through the end of the day on Tuesday, July 16th. Pledges to the campaign will ensure that the Festival will continue to bring adventurous music to Carlsbad, with many free performances in addition to paid concerts including the Village Music Walks, concerts in Magee Park, and educational outreach events in the Carlsbad Schools. Kickstarter campaign rewards include CDs of past Festival highlights, festival merchandise and invitations to special events during the Festival weekend.
