Things to do in Carlsbad this March

Check out the many city-sponsored events and activities going on all around town this March.

The first month of spring brings all sorts of fun to Carlsbad for children and adults alike. Check out the many city-sponsored events and activities going on all around town this March.

Groove with This Is Jazz
A blend of seminar, performance and conversation, this month's “This Is Jazz!” series program will focus on film composer, Larry Groupé, with "Jazz in the Movies" on Saturday, March 9, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Carlsbad City Library. This is the second program of the annual "This is Jazz" series, which dives deep into the origins, styles and players of the first 100 years of the great American art form. The programs are hosted by San Diego jazz author Dirk Sutro, and are held in the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium, part of the Carlsbad City Library complex on Dove Lane.

Lend a hand to beautify a local trail
Work alongside neighbors and friends to help make Veteran’s Park & Golf Course trails even more beautiful on Saturday, March 9, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the city’s monthly Saturday trail volunteer event. Volunteer activities will include weed removal, trail erosion repairs and filling in ruts with decomposed granite. Be sure to wear gloves, closed-toed shoes and sunscreen!

Hop along to the EGGstravaganza spring festival
Arrive early or late since there will be enough opportunities for all to play games, make crafts and participate in the egg scrambles at this year’s EGGstravaganza spring festival Saturday, March 30, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Poinsettia Community Park. Avoid lines by buying activity cards in advance at any city community center, or buy them at the event for access to the egg scramble, fun zone and more. While you're there, check out the Summer Camps Expo, where kids can participate in demonstrations and meet instructors from all different types of camps, from adventure to sports and cooking to performing arts. Call 760-434-2843 for more information.

Get up close with the opera
Musicologist Ron Shaheen brings behind-the-scenes insight into the history and music of the world-class operas featured in the San Diego Opera’s 2013 season with his popular free Opera Previews series at the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane. Get an in-depth look at the opera, "Murder in the Cathedral," in which the "meddlesome priest" Thomas Becket meets his fate at the hands of composer, Ildebrando Pizzetti at this month’s preview, taking place Saturday, March 30, from 10 to 11 a.m.
