Saying Good-Bye to the "Apple of My Eye" Is Never Easy

Moving on from a job that you enjoyed and in which you prospered is tough, whether you left voluntarily or otherwise. Don't feel alone; it happens to everyone.

“I’m sorry, but it’s time to move away,

Though inside my heart, I really want to stay.”

Within the past year I re-discovered one of my favorite pop-rock bands from my
youth, Badfinger.  Discovered by The Beatles road manager and friend Mal Evans,
this British quartet was the first group contracted by the Beatles own recording
label, Apple Records. Badfinger scored a half-dozen Top 10 hits in late ’60′s
and early ’70′s prior to their tragic demise, the details of which are best left
omitted from this blog.  Badfinger recorded five albums for Apple before jumping
to Warner Brothers for a multi-million dollar contract.  The band’s last single
release under Apple Records was fittingly titled “Apple of My Eye” which was a wistful tribute of love for and regret in leaving the label they called “home” and made them international stars.  The foursome never re-gained their previous acclaim upon jumping to Warner Brothers.

Most of us, this writer included, have been forced to leave their own “Apple”
during this most recent recession.  Departure from the people, culture, customers,
and industry is difficult; more so if the tenure was extensive.  It is imperative
that you leave the “pity party” as soon as possible and determine where you will
next grow the fruits of your labor.  The most effective means of securing a new career is simple, yet very time-consuming:  network, network, network!  After all, apples do grow on trees, but careers do not!
