La Costa Glen Residents Rally 'Round the Flag

With more than 300 veterans living at La Costa Glen (www.lacostaglen.com) in Carlsbad, Memorial Day is always a special occasion but this year’s observance was exceptional.

Organized and directed by resident Renee Klepesch, the community’s Memorial Day program included readings from the Civil War including the Gettysburg Address and “O Captain! My Captain!” by Walt Whitman and John McCrae’s “In Flanders Fields” from World War I. The program also featured musical selections from World War I and World War II, with Rosemarie Kubes on the piano. One of the highlights of the event was a special tribute to the women who served during World War II which showcased the accomplishments of some of the women veterans now living at La Costa Glen.

The program was so popular that two sessions had to be held during the day in the community’s Catalina Hall, one at 11 a.m. and another at 2 p.m. The program opened with the pledge of allegiance and an invocation and closed with a moving rendition of “Taps” performed by 17-year-old La Costa Glen employee Molly Kovacs on her trumpet.
