$1000 Reward for ID of Man Whose Dog Killed a Pomeranian near Carlsbad State Beach

The fatal attack happened Wednesday afternoon at the grassy area at Pine Avenue and Carlsbad Blvd.

An anonymous "good samaritan" is putting up a $1,000 reward in hopes it will help authorities identify the owner of a dog that attacked and killed a Pomeranian early Wednesday afternoon.

The owner of the aggressive dog is described as a man with short blond hair in his late teens or early 20s about 6 feet tall, and carrying a skateboard. He ran off following the attack.

The  said the man's dog, which appeared to be a German shepherd-Labrador retriever mix, went after the tiny Pomeranian in a grassy area at Pine Avenue and Carlsbad Boulevard. The Pomeranian's owner was bitten on the hand when she tried to save her pet, DAS spokesman Dan DeSousa said.

The woman, who was not seriously injured, took her Pomeranian to a veterinarian's office, where it died.

An important reason for identifying the owner of the aggressive dog is the need to make sure it is not rabid, according to Dawn Danielson, director of Animal Services. "Whenever a person is bitten by a dog, we must place that dog into quarantine to ensure that the victim does not have to undergo rabies treatment," Danielson noted.
