1 Killed, 5 Wounded in Marine Helicopter Crash

A Huey crashed at Camp Pendleton near the border with San Clemente on Wednesday afternoon.

A Marine was killed after a UH-1Y Huey crashed approximately 1.8 miles east of the border with San Clemente in the San Mateo area Wednesday afternoon, according to 3rd Marine Air Wing officials.

The identities of the Marines have been withheld pending notification of the next of kin.

At least three of the injured Marines were taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla in San Diego, hospital spokeswoman Lisa Ohmstede told Marine Corps Times.

According to the Times, this is the first crash involving the UH-1Y, which starting being used in 2008.

The Camp Pendleton Fire Department received a call at about 12 p.m. and emergency crews took the five injured crew members to hospitals with injuries of undisclosed severity, 3rd Marine Air Wing public affairs Sgt. Ryan Rholes told Patch.

According to City News Service, the crash caused a small brush fire.
