Baby Boomers More Overweight than Other Generations

To ward off diseases related to obesity, it's time to get moving.

According to a recent poll, people born between 1946-64 need to rev it up if they want to avoid not only obesity, but related illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease.

About one-third of boomers polled are obese. More than another one-third are overweight. Only one-fourth of boomers get the minimum two and one-half hours per week of recommended moderate-intensity aerobic activity (such as walking briskly or dancing) that raises the heart rate. More than one-third do not partake in the strength training (such as doing yoga or digging in the garden) vital in fighting the muscle loss that advances with aging.

Notwithstanding all of the media attention devoted to diet and exercise, or quips that 50 is the new 40, it appears that we boomers are better at talking the talk than walking the walk.

I encourage you to start walking that walk. Even if you’ve been sedentary or are overweight, and even if you don’t have the time or energy to walk for 30 minutes, begin with 10 minutes, here and there. It all builds up, and so will you.
