Buy Train Tickets Directly from Your Smartphone

The mobile app will debut just in time for passengers to purchase the popular 'Pony Express' combo tickets to the Del Mar Races which run from July 17 – September 4.

The North County Transit District made the following announcement on Monday, July 1, 2013:

Customers will soon be able to purchase COASTER tickets with a few swipes on their smartphones. NCTD is one of the first transit agencies in California to offer a mobile ticketing application.

The Android version will be available for download beginning July 15 with the iPhone release following soon after.

“The mobile app is like having a ticket vending machine in your pocket. Our passengers will be able to buy paperless COASTER tickets, get schedule information, real time arrival information, and much more all right in the palms of their hands,” said Ryan Bailey, NCTD Chief Financial Officer. “We are always looking at ways to make our public transit easier to use and we think this will be very popular with our customers.”

Through the app, passengers can purchase same-day tickets and tickets for future dates.

The paperless tickets include a barcode and are stored on the phones. The app is free to download and tickets purchased through the app are the same price as tickets purchased in person or online. Once on board the COASTER, Code Enforcement officers will be able to scan the barcodes embedded in each ticket. Step-by-step instructions are built in to the application making navigation very simple.
