Carlsbad Boys Lacrosse Falls in CIF Title Game, Celebrates Best Season Ever

The Lancers finished the season with a 11-9 record. It is the only time in the history of the lacrosse program that a team had won a CIF semifinal game to reach the finals.

The Carlsbad boys lacrosse team fell just one game short of a CIF San Diego section title, dropping the championship game to the Westview Wolverines 8-3.

The Lancers seemed a bit outmanned, losing the physical battle to top-seeded Westview, who seemed to get to every loose ball.

"We lost a lot of possession, and we lost the ground ball war," said Carlsbad coach Tyler Bue. "We just gave them too much possession and they took advantage of their good opportunities."

Carlsbad started out quickly, with Teagen Willes scoring just 48 seconds into the game. It would be the Lancers' first and only lead, however, as Westview ripped off five straight goals in the first half.

Jacob Evans scored for Carlsbad with 32 seconds left in the half, as the teams hit halftime 5-2.

In the second half, the game turned into a physical battle, and Westview's defense locked down on Carlsbad, limiting their shots on goal. The Lancers pulled two within two, with a Spencer Beyer goal, but the Wolverines closed out the game with three straight goals, and were crowned champions of CIF Division 1.
Calen Ketcham had four goals for the Wolverines, and Jack Pope added three.

Bue was proud of his team despite the defeat, and said that they more than met their expectations this season.

"We knew what we had. There's a lot of talent and a lot of young kids," he said. "It's a lot of the same guys we've had in the past. We had high expectations when guys have played together that long."

"It sucks to lose the championship game, but you don't have a great season without a lot of hard work, and the guys did that all year," said Bue.
