Carlsbad No Longer Considered a Disease Cluster for Childhood Cancer

A report claimed California had at least eight confirmed "disease clusters" where an unusually large number of people were sickened by a disease. Carlsbad had been named a cluster, but it's no longer on the list.

In a report released late March, the Natural Resources Defense Council and the National Disease Cluster Alliance highlighted 44 communities in 13 states with higher than ordinary numbers of birth defects, cancer and other illnesses.

The site listed Carlsbad as being investigated as a disease cluster for childhood cancer.

The site later retracted it's statement saying "Subsequent to the release of the issue paper on March 28, 2011, Carlsbad, CA was removed from the list of disease clusters as it no longer meets our criteria."

Lisa Contreras with the County of San Diego Department of Health and Human Services Agency said NRDC's previous claim that Carlsbad was a cluster for childhood cancer was simply false. "State findings from December 2010 show there is no cancer concern." The state's 22-page evaluation concludes, "The results from this study show no elevation of cancer overall in the city of Carlsbad."

Wikipedia calls the Natural Resources Defense Council of NRDC a "New York City-based, non-profit, non-partisan international environmental advocacy group, with offices in Washington DC, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Beijing."
