Mardi Gras Fat Tuesday

Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday in French and in English (or at least in San DIego) it tends to translate into "party."

Mardi Gras brings to mind, for most, a wild party: one involving beads, parades, bright colors and even more colorful behavior. While Fat Tuesday can mean a welcome excuse to throw caution (and sometimes social standards) to the wind, for many the day has deep roots in ritual and religion.

Regardless of the meaning assigned, each year notorious Mardi Gras parties take place around the world, in locales such as Rio de Janeiro and Venice. Closer to home, the most famed shindig takes place in New Orleans.

Although Bourbon Street is our highest profile Mardi Gras destination now, the largest Mardi Gras celebration on the West Coast takes place in the Gaslamp District in downtown San Diego, according to Gaslamp.org
