Sewage Spill in Carlsbad

Signs warning of sewage contamination are posted along the San Marcos Creek where it crosses through the La Costa Country Club.

An estimated 31,650-gallon sewage spill occurred Thursday around 8 a.m. at the Meadowlark Water Reclamation Facility located at 7941 Corintia St. in Carlsbad.

Authorities say the spill was caused by a break in a 6-inch sewer line. Approximately 10,050 gallons of sewage rushed out in the 10 minutes it took crews from the Vallecitos Water District to divert flows back to the treatment plant.

The sewage flowed into a storm drain that leads to the San Marcos Creek. Signs warning of sewage contamination are posted along the creek where it crosses through the La Costa Country Club and will remain in place until samples confirm the water is safe for recreational use.
