Terrorists Blast Earth Day Out of National News

When the terrorists bombs detonated innocent lives were tragically lost and young people like me lost something else, another piece of our childhood innocence.

When the terrorists bombs detonated on April 15th bodies were torn apart innocent lives were tragically lost and young people like me lost something else, another piece of our childhood innocence. Kids learned once again, that evil exists to an extent that we had not previously imagined was possible. When violence like this happens the little stories celebrating life and hope are replaced with news of terror and images of violence. Many crossing the finish line when the bombs went off were running for charities, but that is not what we will remember. I had been praying that the world be "extra safe" because I was scheduled to be featured in a National Weekly Magazine with other kids about Earth Day Heroes, and the reporter sweetly explained that I had “really made the cut” and the article would run April 19th, “unless a National News Event bumps Earth Day”. Unfortunately, the prayers of kids don't keep terrorists at bay. That I was already worried about the threat of violence bumping my story is a sad indication of the world we live in. A school shooting was where my imagination went as I worried something bad might happen, because the town where I grew up had one. In Carlsbad, we lost that innocence a while ago. Getting bumped is nothing compared to what the people of Boston are going through. There was an exciting phone interview, multiple emails, then a three hour photo shoot with their camera crew. It was an honor to be selected and to get my photos taken by an awesome photographer, who usually works with celebrities. My excitement that this article would help create awareness about hunger and the environmental impact of food waste was replaced by great sadness at the loss of life and the suffering of so many. My generation cares about the environment and on Earth Day adults seem to take notice. I want to do my part not to let terrorists take Earth Day away from our National Consciousness. It's not about me or my little organization it's about celebrating good and not letting evil win.
