3,500 People Expected to Walk for MS Sunday at Legoland

More than 3,500 people are expected to help raise about $300,000 in donations for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society at the Legoland California in Carlsbad on Sunday morning, May 1.

The National MS Society’s San Diego-based Pacific South Coast Chapter will host its 2011 San Diego County Credit Union Walk MS, a fundraising walk. The two-mile fun walk will begin at 8 a.m., with check-in beginning at 7 a.m. Admission is free to attend Walk MS. There is no cost to be a walker.Registration information is available at MSwalk.com.

National MS Society officials said the donations will benefit research and services and programs for people with MS, a chronic, unpredictable and disabling neurological disease of the central nervous system with no known cause, cure or prevention. Legoland will be closed to the general public during Walk MS, but will open at its regularly scheduled time of 10 a.m. At the conclusion of the fund-raiser, all walkers will be invited to re-enter the theme park at a discounted admission price.

Walkers will have the opportunity to earn prizes, including t-shirts, movie tickets and gift cards, based on the amount of donations they collect. In addition to live entertainment, a variety of refreshments will keep energy levels high at the fund-raiser. Walkers will be invited to sample muffins from Souplantation, coffee from Don Francisco’s Gourmet Coffee, pizza from Papa John’s, juices from Langers Juice Co., Pepsi and other treats.

Now in its 21st year in San Diego, Walk MS is known for drawing a large number of teams representing businesses, neighborhoods, clubs, community groups, churches and family members and friends of a person with MS. Many teams come up with a team name and outfit their members with costumes, including T-shirts, hats or balloons. All it takes is four or more people to form a team. Free snacks and beverages will be provided to walkers, plus live music and a festive finish line celebration.
