We have heard it on the news, in the elections and read numerous articles about the inevitable rise in healthcare costs. This means that your health insurance premiums will most likely rise as well. The average health care premium rate increase for large employers in 2012 was 4.9 percent, down from 8.5 percent in 2011 and 6.2 percent in 2010. In 2013, however, average health care premium increases are projected to jump up to 6.3 percent. Also, average health plan premium costs per employee are projected to jump to $11,188, of which average employee contributions to the health plan premium would be $2,385. In addition, average employee out-of-pocket costs (co-pays, co-insurance and deductibles) would be $2,429.
How can we make healthcare affordable in 2013 and the years to come?
We all know that healthcare reform needs to happen, regardless if you think it’s happening now. But instead of waiting for the government to reform it, let me tell you that you can do a lot of your own “health care reform.” Let me tell you how.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is paramount and preventative care is the best way to keep yourself healthy, and limit future medical expenses. Chronic disease, which is estimated to be a whopping 75% of the costs of U.S. healthcare, is still on a long upward trend. Our healthcare system is not set up to deal with chronic, maintenance, and preventive problems; both the payment system and the expectations of practice are set up to deal with acute episodes which are why some people really call our “healthcare” system, “crisiscare”. The U.S. deals with chronic disease so poorly that it could almost be said that we do not deal with it at all.
So this is where you come in. In order to reform your health care, it so important to take charge of your health. Instead of pouring your money into a system that only helps when there is a “crisis”, direct more attention and money into natural ways and lifestyle choices that will effectively manage such conditions as diabetes, congestive heart failure, asthma, COPD, alcoholism, depression, etc…. Cutting the cost and suffering associated with chronic disease by any significant fraction would make an enormous difference.

1. Good Diet
A problem we see in our American high calorie diet is too much processed foods, red meats and carbohydrates and not enough organic fresh fruits and vegetables. A person with high blood cholesterol levels can drop their blood cholesterol by 100 points without statin drugs just by managing their diet the right way and also implementation of a simple exercise program.
2. Good Exercise
Man was made to move the body. We see a lot less of that today. The benefits of exercise are astounding. Exercise has been shown to improve blood sugar metabolism helping to curve diabetes, it boosts (HDL) or "good," cholesterol and decreases unhealthy triglycerides, delivers oxygen and nutrients to your tissues, lowers heart rate and blood pressure thus lowering risk of heart disease and helping your cardiovascular system work more efficiently. And when your heart and lungs work more efficiently, you also have more energy through the day. It makes stronger bones reducing osteoporosis, lowers risk of certain types of cancer, prevents and improves arthritis; improves self-esteem and mood. “I don’t have time” you say. An effective exercise program can be done in as little as 10 minutes a day. Don’t look back 20- 30 years from now and say… “I wish I would have done something sooner.”
3. Get Plenty of Sleep
An adult should get (7-9) hours of rest a night. Adequate sleep will improve memory and concentration, help reduce inflammation in body, lower stress, fatigue and depression, and improve stamina.
4. Good Nervous and Musculoskeletal System: Chiropractic
Your nervous system controls your whole body. Wouldn’t it be important to keep it running at 100%? Unfortunately we receive a lot of day to day stress on the body that forces our nervous and musculoskeletal systems to work sub-par.
