Switchfoot Bro-Am Concert to Benefit Homeless Teens

If you're looking for something to do this Saturday, attend the free Switchfoot Bro-Am Concert to enjoy music, a surf competition and a great charity.

Saturday, June 18, the 7th annual Switchfoot Bro-Am Presented by Hurley will be held at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas to benefit local Stand Up For Kids chapters in the north county area. , a GRAMMY award winning rock band composed of San Diego locals, has hosted the event since 2005. The event includes a surf contest from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and a concert from 11 a.m.to 5 p.m. This event is completely free to the public and has drawn as many as 7,500 attendees each year.

Since the Switchfoot Bro-Am has no admission fee, in past years over $400,000 has been raised through donations and fees to enter the surf contest. This year Switchfoot hopes to break it's $135,000 record set in 2010 with a private auction party held on June 16 and an after party held on June 18 at the Belly Up Tavern. In addition, since a desire to compete in the contest has been steadily rising since the Bro-Am’s original conception, teams represented by Hurley, Billabong, Surfer Magazine and others fought for their team’s spot with donations to Stand Up For Kids. A junior competition was also added to the line up and spots were given to the youth teams that collected the most clothing to distribute throughout local chapters.

The actual beneficiary of the Switchfoot Bro-Am, Stand Up For Kids, is a cause very close to my heart. As the Vice President of the Stand Up for Kids Club at , I have worked for the past two years towards raising awareness and aiding the homeless youth in our community.  Stand Up For Kids is a nationwide organization aimed to provide relief for at-risk, homeless, and street kids as well as prevent future generations of our youth becoming homeless. Kim Goodeve-Green, Director of Center Operations at the Stand Up For Kids shelter in Oceanside, has done an exceptional job of providing love and support to the homeless youth within our community through instilling pride, hope, and the belief that they can change their life for the better.
