Carlsbad Man Dies After Being Severely Beaten
Gary Schmid, 63, was found in a North County Alley in February. After three months in the hospital he passed away Monday.
Authorities released the name today of a 63-year-old man who died in a trauma center this week, nearly three months after being found severely beaten in a North County alley. Gary Schmid of Carlsbad was pronounced dead at Pomerado Hospital in Poway on Monday morning, according to the county Medical Examiner's Office.
On the afternoon of Feb. 16, Schmid was found badly injured in an access road off the 600 block of North Coast Highway in Oceanside. The victim may have been dumped in the area after being attacked in Escondido, according to police, who have made no arrests in the case and have released no possible motive for the assault.
A cause-of-death ruling is on hold pending completion of postmortem exams.
